CONGRATULATIONS to DSD's Avril Dillon who has beaten off stiff competition to win a gold medal for Ireland in the Masters World Athletics Championships in Toruń, Poland today. Having come first with a season's best of 7:70 in her heat in the W40 60 metres sprint yesterday, Avril headed into today's final along with the rest of the world's finest.
The final was very tight as all athletes were out of the blocks together. Avril was in contention all the way and, with the raucous support from her fellow Irish and DSD athletes, she then pulled ahead as the finish line beckoned. Wow! Watch the magic here...
And then the medal ceremony. It is stirring to hear our National Anthem played on the world stage. And here we were enjoying every moment of it.
Avril's hard work in training has really paid off. And that is on top of her coaching. Maybe our new track has also contributed in some way - we like to think that we are going to see a lot more medals come DSD's way!
Celebrations? Sure, but in moderation. Avril is only starting. She has the 60m hurdles coming up and then the 4 x 200m relay. We wait in giddy anticipation! But in the meantime, a huge congratulations to Avril for this achievement.
DSD's Masters are flying! Adina Gheorghiu bagged a 4th place in the W45 60m Final. Congratulations, Adina!
