The “Battle of the Boyne” was re-enacted at Oldtown yesterday, only this time it was the Rás na hEireann Cross-Country race, which supplied the competitive edge on this historic site. Top class competition was ensured from a visiting U.S.A., team taking on the home competitors, headed by Hiko Tonosa (D.S.D).
The Americans had four in the leading group from the start and good team tactics saw them alternate the lead with only Hiko able to handle the fast pace. Eventually it became a two man race, as the top American Matt McClintock and Hiko surged to the front over the last lap. Hiko’s loss of training because of injury and ‘flu prevented him producing his usual burst of speed at the end, finishing a gallant 2nd to McClintock.
A large group of D.S.D. Meet & Train athletes paid their annual visit to this event and enjoyed the good weather and competition. Our women’s team won the silver medals in a competitive race with Eileen Gillick leading the team home in 12th place, with Linda Finnegan 19th and Cynthia O’Neill 21st.
Incredible efforts were registered by both teams – results as follows:
