D.S.D. swept to the top of the Irish Road Racing programme yesterday with comprehensive victories in the Men and Women’s team races at the AXA 5 mile.
There were over 4,000 competitors in this well managed event.
As they raced around the first time there were five D.S.D., athletes in the top ten, in a relentless pace that saw the first mile covered in 4.30 secs. Matt Bergin and Mick Clohisey (Raheny) broke away shortly after half way with Clohisey showing his class over the last 400m of his home venue, racing to victory, with Matt Bergin a gallant 2nd. Hiko Tonosa faded to 6th place as his recent ‘flu took its toll. Robert Corbally played a captain’s part finishing in 10th place with Mark Molloy (18th) completing the D.S.D. winning team. Raheny, who were favourites to retain their title, finished 2nd with Clonliffe 3rd.
Not to be outdone the D.S.D. Women’s team also carried home the winner’s trophy, with Linda Byrne leading the team home in 5th place, Meghan Ryan 7th and Amy Moran 13th. Apart from the Vhi Women’s Mini Marathon, this was the biggest women’s field in the country. Sheelagh Jones was also in top form winning silver in her age category.
