DSD Reign Supreme in Portlaoise!

Writer: Liz McDonaghLiz McDonagh

The first race of the 2025 Peugeot race series kicked off with the Streets of Portlaoise 5k on St. Patrick’s Day. The race series takes a different format this year, with team prizes being offered for each race, rather than for the overall series as a whole. This new format didn't affect the enthusiasm from DSD, with 18 athletes taking part.

Killian Mooney was at the head of affairs from the gun and was a clear winner in 14:57, ahead of David Mansfield from Clonmel and Luke Purcell of Nenagh Olympic.

In the women's event, Eimear Maher put in another strong performance to take 2nd place in 16:47, just 1 second behind Hannah Steeds of Leevale AC, with Alex Murphy in 3rd.

Strong runs from Aaron Donnelly (7th), and Éanna Ó Brádaigh (11th) on the men's side, along with Saoirse O'Brien (6th) and Serena Tuffy (11th) in the women's, meant that DSD were easy winners of the team prize, finishing over 100 points of second placed St. Abbans. Patrick Elliott, Roly Mossop and Emma Goddard were also in action, making sure that DSD had strength in numbers for the team event.

It was great to see a strong contingent of DSD’s up and coming underage athletes taking part too, with strong performances by Jake Mathews, Lochlann Hannon, Cillian Chambers, Callum Downes and Andrew Gillart, who all featured strongly in the junior men’s category. Isabella Prina Mello and Sadhbh Hassett also featured strongly in the junior women’s age category.

Not to be outdone by the younger athletes, Adriele Prina Mello finished 2nd in the M50 category, being awarded the exact same time as the winner – not sure if there was a steward’s inquiry?
