Dundrum South Dublin (D.S.D) must be one of the most travelled clubs, in any sport, in the country. It’s members made their presence felt in U.S.A, Belgium, Portugal, and also at home over the weekend.
A glorious run for Siofra Cleirigh Buttner in Lexington Kentucky, saw her win at 800m in 2.02.1 to qualify for the American Collegiate Final in three week’s time. Following on her ‘athlete of the meeting’ in the Penn Relays, she is now ranked 3rd (800m) in the Collegiate system and will be hoping for a podium placing.
Jodie McCann, who has trained with Siofra, must have been inspired by her performances, as she produced a super 1500m in Oordegem, Belgium in 4.22.85 PB, which amazed everyone, as it ranks tenth in the world for a 17 year old, and is an “A” Qualifying Time for the European Junior Championships. It looks like the next generation of D.S.D athletes will soon add to D.S.D’s 13 Olympians!
Luke McCann also achieved the “B” standard for 1500m, at the same meeting in Belgium, in 3.50.50. He will now try for the “A” standard to ensure his place with Team Ireland.
D.S.D women’s track team celebrated their ‘seven in a row’ winning of the National League with their trip to the European Club “B” Championships in Portugal, and put up a good performance to finish in 5th place. Sinead Denny, national champion at 400m, got D.S.D off to a wonderful start, when she decimated the field. Sinead was her usual positive self at her favorite distance and coasted to victory in 53.86. She then anchored the 4x400m team to a 3rd place finish.
Anita White (National Javelin Champion and Record Holder) achieved a 2nd place finish with a throw of 41.41. Maria McCambridge (Dublin City Marathon winner) showed dedication to her club, as she fought her way to the finish line in a race well short of her chosen events and was rewarded for her effort with a 2nd place finish in the 1500m in 4.44.57. Other big scorers were Fiona Clinton 3rd 5,000m; Meghan Ryan 3rd 3,000m and Grainne Moggan High Jump.
Meanwhile a large number of athletes kept the home fires burning, with inspirational performances from Joe Halwax 400m hurdles 53.70 and Aengus Meldon 800m 1.53.5. Both athletes competed on Saturday in Santry in the Universities International and on Sunday, same venue, AAI Games, with victories on each day, in wet and windy conditions. They can be well satisfied with these fine performances.
At the Bertie Quinn Track & Field Meet in Tullamore there was a win in the Open 3,000m for Robert Corbally and he was followed home by Christian McKenna who registered a PB in his first race of the year in 8.44. Also in Tullamore James Maguire 1st 800m “B” in 1.57.04 (PB); James Holden 1st 400m 49.45; Conor Halpin 7th 1500m 4.15.33 and Abbie Taylor 7th 1500m 4.45.
In the National Masters Combined events in Santry, Kevin Byrne finished 1st 040 and Peadar McGing 2nd 050.
Very well done to all!
