Another great day on Sunday for D.S.D., at the European Cross Country Championships in Oeiras, Portugal, with a Bronze Medal for Hiko Tonosa in the Senior Men’s 10,000m. Our team of Hiko 29.51; Paul O’Donnell 36th 31.57; Emmet Jennings 37th 31.58 and Matt Bergin 77th finished 9th overall of 31 competing teams.
Hiko was following a proud tradition for D.S.D. athletes, at this competition, with Siofra Cleirigh Buttner 3rd Junior Race, and previously Charlotte French O’Carroll 1st; twin sister Rebecca 2nd and Suzanne Huet 3rd, fora comprehensive win for D.S.D.
Hiko followed up on his first Irish placing at European Cross Country in Abbotstown (13th overall) and has an unparalleled record since arriving from Ethiopia, winning many road races and in 2021 achieved the double 5,000m and 10,000 at National Senior Track & Field Championships.
This year’s European C.C., was a high grade competition with many African runners, representing their adopted countries, dominating the race results. Hiko contested the lead from the start and was only run out of Gold over the last 400m. He looks like an athlete on the way to the top and hopes to qualify for the World Indoor Championships in March, and has a number of races lined up on the Indoor Circuit, in order to do so.
Congratulations to Hiko and our Senior Men's Team!
