Hiko Tonasa had his first track race of the season in Drogheda on Saturday at the Irish Milers Club promotion. Having won 25 races on the road in the past year and a half, it was good to see he retains a lot of speed with a flying finish over 3,000m to win in 8.09.62. He will now concentrate on his track season, chasing an Olympic qualifying time, and at the moment is six seconds short of the standard.
The feature event was the Senior 800m, which became a rehearsal for the National Senior, as most of the top runners were in action. Aengus Meldon was right in the mix all the way around, running out of steam as he challenged for the title, finishing 7th overall in 1.53.68. Jack Moraghan (U.19) had a win in the 800m “D” with a time of 2.01.78.
Others in action were Michael McCarthy 8th 1500m “B” 4.13.51 and Kevin Power Kelly 8th 3,000m “B” 9.52.86.
At the Irish Runner 10 mile race in the Phoenix Park, Emmet Jennings finished 11th in 53.35.
Well done to all!
