Fresh off the back of some super performances in the last few weeks, DSD athletes were out in force on Saturday 28th January at the Indoor Intervarsity Championships in Abbotstown.
Molly Hourihan (UCD), Charlotte Bourke (TCD) and Katie Magee (UCD) got proceedings underway in the 400m, with Molly (55.89 - PB) and Charlotte (57.09) advancing to the final. The final proved to be a cracker with an almost blanket finish for 2nd place which saw Molly just edge it in another PB (and UCD record) of 55.55! Charlotte finished a strong 5th in 57.07, a new TCD record.
In the men’s 400m, Ciarán Carthy (DCU), James Holden (UCD) and Scott Dunne (TUD) executed their heats well, with Ciarán (48.99) and James (49.29) qualifying for the final. The men’s final was slightly more spread out than the women’s, and saw Ciarán come home in a new indoor PB of 48.37 to take 2nd place, with James closing fast in 4th (49.41).
Having taken a break from track running for a while, Eimear Maher (UCD) burst back onto the scene finishing 5th in the 3000m (10.09.68). Emma Roche also had a strong showing in the shot putt, finishing 10th in 7.31m. In the 200m, Jack Moraghan finished 2nd in his heat (23.51), narrowly missing out on a place in the final.
After an unfortunate false start in the 200m, Cara Murphy teamed up with Molly and their UCD club mates to win the women’s 4x200m relay in 1.42.90 - a UCD record. Charlotte ran a very strong last leg to claim bronze for her TCD team (1.48.21). In the men’s 4x200m, Ciarán helped his DCU team to victory in a lightning quick 1.27.99, with James and his UCD team just outside the medals in 4th (1.33.29).
Overall, it was a fantastic day of competition with DSD athletes taking home 6 medals.
