Brilliant performances from Meghan Ryan and Emmet Jennings in blistering heat and sunshine yesterday, saw them win their first National Senior Titles, competing in the National 5 Mile Championships in the Phoenix Park.
Donal's report from the course as follows:
Emmet led from the start and had a tough head to head battle with Jake O’Regan (St Johns AC), the pair were neck and neck into the final miles with Emmet pulling away over the final 600m of the race. Emmet winning in 24:27, two seconds ahead of O’Regan in 24:29.
In the Women’s race Meghan started fast and took a decisive early lead which was never in danger. Battling the heat and the tough course Meghan held her focus to maintain a strong pace winning in28.07 some 90 secs ahead of second place.
Meghan would lead her DSD to the senior team title backed up by excellent performances from Serena Tuffy and Isabella Tomkin Beddy stepping up to senior to help her clubmates. DSD had almost 90 seconds to spare over their nearest challenger in the team standings.
DSD were also the leading team in the mens event however an administrative error meant that Patrick Elliot wasn’t counted in the official results, Emmet’s win supported by Eanna OBradaigh in 6th (26.10) Patrick Elliot (8th) 26.30 and Stephen Gibney 74th (30.24).
Well done to all!
