D.S.D women’s Track & Field team set out in defence of their National Club’s title yesterday in Tallaght and began with a comprehensive win. Having won this title for the last seven years in a row, the present team looks stronger than ever. There were many fine performances with wins in both relays, 4x100m (Rachel Dunne, Mollie O’Reilly; Niamh Gowing and Katie Magee) and 4x400m (Sarah Gaughran; Molly Hourihan; Katie Magee and Ruth Anne Shannon). Niamh Gowing set the ball rolling with a great win in the 100m hurdles, followed by a win for Mollie O’Reilly 200m; and Meghan Ryan 1500m. Second place finishes from Molly Hourihan 400m hurdles; Fiona Clinton 3,000m and Emma Coffey Javelin kept the points total rolling along to ensure victory in this first round.
In the men’s competition a very young D.S.D team finished in 3rd place, led by team captain, Joe Halwax, who led by example with a double victory in the 110m hurdles and 400m hurdles and he finished off an exhausting day with a great leg in the winning 4x400m relay team, alongside Ciaran McCarthy; Aengus Meldon and James Holden. On the winning 4×100 team were Mark Kavanagh; Ciarán Carthy; Killian Waldron and James Holden. Great second place finishes came from Mark Kavanagh 100m and 200m; Aengus Meldon 800m; Patrick MacGabhann 1500m and Robert Corbally 5,000m.
Well done to all the other athletes, in field events and track, on both teams for their great performances and contribution towards our very good team points. Best of luck in the next round.
