We lost some key personnel during the week which meant we couldn’t field teams in U17 & U19 Boys or U 19 girls.
However we had some gutsy performances in all the races which more than made up for it.
Isabella Tomkin Beddy, running for Dublin in the U15 girls race ran a great race and finished just outside the Medals in 13th but she scored on the victorious Dublin team.
Jamie Byrne was back to his best picking up an individual medal finishing 11th place in the U15 boys, Jamie was first Dublin athlete home. Saoirse O’Brien then matched that performance running up an age finishing 10th in the U17 girls, also leading the Dublin team home.
Oisin Kelly made sure the DSD colours would remain prominent with a superb run in the U19 boys finishing 4th against top quality competition.
The U15 boys team grabbed our first team medals of the day. All 6 athletes fought the whole way around the 3,500m race distance and combined well to grab a gutsy team bronze.
The U17 girls team had to swallow the loss of their Irish International and lead runner Eimear Maher, just before the race start, due to illness. The girls didn’t let that setback upset them as they worked together as a team throughout their 4K distance, fighting to the end and earning a well deserved 3rd place. This performance looks even better when you consider all of the girls are only U16 and were running up an age group.
A big thank you to the athletes, who battled through the mud today and 3 weeks ago in Abbottstown, to their parents for making sure they kept training and got to the races, and especially to all of the coaches who worked tirelessly to prepare the athletes for the whole of the XC season through the Dublin Leagues, Dublin Championships and All Irelands.
A special word of thanks to Brian O’Donoghue who has been ever present at all of the races, setting up the tent, collecting and distributing the race numbers. It is support like this that can be taken for granted, but is a vital function on race day.
I think everyone has earned a break. Full training resumes for the endurance groups on Saturday 28th December.
