A mighty effort by Hiko Tonosa, to defend his 5,000m title, saw him fall just short in Santry, at the National Track & Field Championships on Sunday. He finished two seconds short (13.55.97) of Darragh McElhinney U.C.D., the new kid on the block, who was fastest over the last 200m. Efrem Gidey (Clonliffe Harriers) was a close 3rd, with Paul O’Donnell having a great race in 4th place (14.13.48). The future of D.S.D’s distance squad looks bright indeed!
A brilliant display of hurdling by Kate Doherty saw her finish in silver medal position, behind Sarah Lavin, in a high grade 100mH. In the men’s 110H, David Dagg was delighted to take 3rd place with a very brave effort, for a first time on the podium.
The other bright spot of the weekend was a gold medal finish by the women’s 4x100m relay team, who put up an excellent display. To add to that our 4x400m women’s team finished in 2nd place.
Zak Curran was unable to take his place in the 400m final, due to injury, after running 48.51 in winning his heat.
Rocco Zaman-Browne finished 6th in the 800m final in 1.52.
Molly Hourihan placed 5th in the 200m final (25.69), and Charlotte Bourke also reached the final of the 400m hurdles to finish 8th (65.84).
